A huge misconception in the business world is that burnout is caused by working too hard. It’s the nature of professionals in corporate positions and entrepreneurs to work hard but not all of them experience a sense of being overwhelmed. They've dedicated their life to working in a high pressure environment or being their own boss and creating a lifestyle of independence -- and that doesn't come easy.
What causes overwhelm and burnout is the inability to prioritise your daily tasks and a lack of ability and understanding to manage your emotions.
In business, life can be hard, and it has it’s fair share of ups, downs. Business professional and entrepreneurs can experience emotional roller coasters daily and if they are unaware of how to navigate this element of entrepreneurship, overwhelm and burnout follows.
So, here is my 6 simple hacks that all professionals and entrepreneurs can use to avoid feeling overwhelmed and burnt out.
1)Wake up early
Waking up early can give you a huge head start on your day. In the morning time you can be a lot more productive than the middle of the day - you are more energised and there are fewer distractions around you as most people are still asleep. By starting your day off with this positive and productive step, you have set yourself up for the day ahead.
2) Exercise first thing in the morning
Exercise is a natural remedy for stress. By exercising in the mornings your brain is releasing endorphins which helps you feel more relaxed and it has also been proven that morning exercise improves your cognitive performance throughout the remainder of the day. So take at least 30 minutes to do some form of exercise so that you are starting your day off on a positive note.
3) Start every day with a "Must Do" List!
Each night before you retire have a journal and write down the top 4-6 tasks that are a priority for you do get done the following day so that when you wake up in the morning you have a structure to the day ahead and you know exactly what has to be done. This allows you to have clarity and when you get into the habit of doing this each night there's a muscle to mental connection plus a stronger sense of commitment to achieving it.
4) Start of each morning with a cold shower.
I have been doing this little hack for the past 6 months and it is the small difference that has made all the difference to my day. A cold shower is an instant wake up. It helps shock the mind and body into getting rid of the sluggishness each morning as well as having so many other positive benefits for your mind and body.
5) Start/finish each day with a meditation.
It’s great having a priority list each day but you need to have some focused time out so that you are ready to face the challenges of the day ahead. Every morning and night take 10-20 minutes to do some guided meditation so that you are always in the right frame of mind for work. This will help to reduce feelings of stress and anxiety, as well as helping you sleep better at night, leaving you feeling more refreshed for your working day.
6) Take 30 minutes out of your day from your environment
Overworking can have a serious impact on your health. It is known to increase stress levels, anxiety, and cause sleep deprivation. Therefore, it is essential that you take at least 30 minutes out of your working day to do something other than work. This could be going for a walk, listening to music that you like, or even reading your favourite book. This will help to break your pattern and clear your mind during work.
By getting into the habit of completing these simple tasks each day you will notice that previous feelings of stress and burnout will soon diminish and you will feel much more refreshed and ready to tackle the challenges of the working day ahead. It is therefore important to reflect on this. Ask yourself now - Which of these tasks do I need to incorporate into my daily life that I am not already doing in order to reduce my feelings of burnout and stress?
