What is the difference between those who achieved success and those who have not? The answer is simple – HABITS. Most of us have goals and aspirations that we desperately want to achieve, yet we have not done so. This is ultimately down to repeating bad habits that hold us back.
If you truly want to achieve success in your life, it is necessary to understand the habits that successful people have, but also those which they don’t.
Successful people DO NOT….
1. Have Unrealistic Expectations
Perfection does not exist. It is necessary to know the difference between excelling and trying to achieve perfection. Of course there is no harm in setting high standard goals that you want to achieve, which will require a lot of hard work and dedication. However, it is important to recognise that everything has flaws and a downside. This is why successful people NEVER seek perfection – they know it does not exist and they never let unrealistic expectations control them.
2. Master Their Work
When a person says that they have mastered their profession, they are claiming that they have nothing left to learn. This appeals to them as once they have reached the top, they can stop, sit back from their profession and “enjoy their success”. Yet, successful people know that mastery does not exist. Those who have been most successful in the world know that there is ALWAYS more to learn, and opportunity for growth. Their success is not about the end result, it is about the journey which keeps on going, allowing them to grow and learn new things every day.
3. Improvise
Going into a situation without any plan can set you up for failure. You have not prepared for what will be thrown at you and you can not take full advantage of the opportunity you have been given. Successful people are always prepared – they have a plan and structure for everything they do, therefore they can always decide what the best plan of attack is in any situation. When it comes to anything, preparation is necessary to seize an opportunity. As Benjamin Franklin once said, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”
4. Have Unspecific Goals
When goal setting a specific plan of action is essential. Those who have impulsive aspirations have a hard time following through due to lack of structure and self-discipline. When successful people want to make their dreams become a reality, they always have a well thought out plan that they have developed over a long period of time, which will ensure they will get to where they want to be. This is the foundation for success and the results that you achieve are only a reflection of your plan.
5. Give Minimal Effort
Some people lack the essential commitment and effort that it takes to be successful. Why is it that we complain about not being able to achieve our goals, yet we only put enough effort in which just about gets us by in life? Successful people always go above what is needed in life, no matter what the situation is. Whether it be something that they don’t particularly have any interest in, or whether is it the main things that they want in life – Successful people will view every opportunity as a chance to grow and be the best that they can.
6. Believe in the “Impossible”
Many goals may seem more much more difficult that others. They may be tiring, exhausting, and require more time and energy. In these particular times, most people give up, attributing this to the “impossible”. However, the most successful people in the world never see ANY goal to be out of reach, and that is why they have achieved their success. By viewing anything as “impossible” you are limiting yourself to the options you have in life. Success is based on dedication and determination, and with this no goal is out of reach.
7. Pass Responsibility
Most of the time when something goes wrong, people like to make excuses. They look for someone or something else to blame their mistakes on. One of the keys to success is getting to the real truth, and dealing with it. You may not feel great about admitting that you have made bad choices in your life, but the most important thing is recognising that only you are to blame and this will help you to ensure that you won’t make that mistake again in the future. This will make your journey to success much easier in the long run.
8. Let others take control
Successful people always take matters into their own hands. Those who let others control their lives never get the results that they really wish for. You are in charge of pursuing your own dreams, not anyone around you. When you start to take control of your own life and your own goals you will start to see the changes that you want.
9. Stay in their Comfort Zone
Creativity is one of the key elements noted by successful people that helped them to achieve their goals. It is important to reach out of your comfort zone - experimenting with new things, taking different approach’s to tackling your goals, trying to create something original. Those who stay within their comfort zone do not take full advantage of the opportunities they have been given to be the best that they can be. The most successful people stay at the top because they never stop pushing and experimenting.
10.Take all the Credit
Success is not achieved alone. Although successful people have dedicated their lives to working hard for their goals, there have always been people in the background providing support and motivation which has allowed them get to the place they are today. Successful people never forget those who helped them. It is important to be humble and thankful for those who have helped you on your journey.
Success is a bumpy road and there are problems that you will face along the way. The key is identifying what you are doing wrong, and how you can learn and move on from this. Some problems may be hard to overcome, however by taking the necessary steps you are moving in the right direction of being one step closer to achieving your dreams. So ask yourself this question - What can I do to change my habits on a daily basis which will get me one step closer to achieving the success I want?
